Fighting against lung cancer on World No Tobacco Day

News

In the lead up to World No Tobacco Day on 31st of May, 2016, MediHelp Romania (www.medihelp.ro), part of MediHelp International, the Central Eastern Europe leader in the private health insurance market, wants to raise awareness of cancer - especially lung, bronchus and trachea cancer.

According to GFK Romania research, lung cancer has the highest incidence - 7 out of 10 Romanian patients were in the 4th stage when diagnosed.

Also, figures of the latest Eurostat show that 27% of Romanians smoke regularly (33% of men and 22% of women), a percentage that has decreased 3% since 2012 but 26% above the European average rates.

”The costs for pulmonary cancer care can vary on average from 20.000 euro up to 500,000 euro. In general, the costs for cancer care can financially ruin a family. It is a huge world health issue and us, in the private sector, have the possibility of slowing down and ultimately reversing the growth in cancer deaths if we join our forces. Lung cancer is one of the most preventable cancers if we reduced tobacco and alcohol consumption, if we decreased exposure to carcinogens, and if we promoted healthy lifestyles”, stated Mr. Zahal Levy, President of MediHelp International.

The new MediHelp International Plans (underwritten by Generali) introduce to the Romanian market 5 packages (Blue, Azure, Cobalt, Admiral, Royal), all which fully cover cancer care - hospitalisation, chemotherapy and associated consultations, drugs and tests.

According to the European Congress of the Society for Medical Oncology in Vienna (2012), in Europe, lung cancer has the highest total economic burden, a total of 19 billion Euros.
